Everything you and I have ever read about successful job interviewing is wrong. On interviews, we brag about our achievements. We say it in a professional tone, layout out accomplishment like cheese and crackers, inviting others to nibble. Instead of tooting your own horn, switch gears. Don't talk about how well you did. Talk about how you have made all your past bosses look good. It's not enough to say, "I led the sales campaign that not only met, but exceeded our sales goals." Add, "Which was instrumental in helping my boss receive Sales Manager of the Year award and bonus." Always mention the bonus. Be coy about it if it's your style. ("We pulled some all nighters, but it was worth it when my boss made the cover of the Sunday business section.") Or, "No, I'm mistaken, we didn't land that account in '05, it was '04, because I remember when management celebrated in the Caribbean they all had to vote absentee." Watch your interviewer's eyes light up. Be thinking of additional stories for when it's time to negotiate salary. |
